Repent And Believe

Change Your Mind About Jesus Christ

Jer 13:23 23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil. (KJV)

Just as it impossible for a person to change the color of his skin, and for a leopard to change his spots; it is impossible for a person to repent from sin before salvation. Therefore, if repentance from sin was required for salvation, no one could ever be saved.

Eph 2:1-7 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. (KJV)

Before we were saved, we were dead in our sins and by nature children of wrath. A person who is dead in sin cannot do anything to change his condition, and most certainly cannot repent from sin. Therefore, in order for us to be saved, God had to make us alive together with Christ because only God can give life to a dead person. Our salvation doesn’t depend upon us one iota; it is all the result of God’s work on our behalf.

John 1:11-13 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. (KJV)

The Jews rejected Jesus Christ; they did not believe in Him. They needed to repent, they needed to change their minds concerning Jesus and receive Him, by believing in Him.

Acts 2:22-23 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

Acts 2:36-38 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

These Jews rejected Jesus and demanded His crucifixion; Peter told them that they must repent, change their minds about Jesus, stop rejecting Him. The repentance that saves is not repentance from sin, but it is repentance from unbelief. We are saved, and our sins are forgiven, when we stop rejecting Jesus Christ and put all our trust in Him, and in Him only.

Acts 3:13-15 The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.

Acts 3:19-21 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. (KJV)

Again, these Jews disowned Jesus and demanded that He be put to death. Peter again, told them that they must repent concerning Jesus. They had to change their minds about Jesus; they had to stop rejecting Him, and had to receive Him, by believing in Him. Our sins are forgiven only after we repent concerning Jesus Christ and put our faith and trust in Him, and in Him only.

Acts 17:16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

Acts 17:22-23 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

Acts 17:29-31 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. (KJV)

Paul told these Gentiles that they must repent, turn from worshiping idols. The repentance that saved the Gentiles was to stop believing in idols and to start believing in Jesus, to turn from idols to Jesus Christ.

Acts 26:15-20 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. (KJV)

The Lord commissioned Paul to preach to men everywhere that they must repent; that they must turn from all that they believe in, and that they must put their faith in Jesus Christ, and in Him only.

Rom 6:1-7 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. (KJV)

We were slaves to sin before we were saved, we did not have the power to repent from sin. We were placed into Christ, when we first believed in Him. Now that we are saved, we are able to repent from sin because we died to sin, when we were placed into Christ. Therefore, repentance from sin takes place after salvation and not before.

Eph 2:8-10 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (KJV)

Salvation is all of grace and not works. Repentance from sin is works. Therefore, if repentance from sin was necessary for salvation, salvation would be based on the work of repentance. Salvation would be the result of grace plus works, which would not be grace at all. Since we know, without a doubt, that salvation is all of grace, we must conclude that the repentance that saves is not repentance from sin, but repentance from unbelief. Repentance from sin follows salvation; it is part of the good works that God has prepared for us to walk in after salvation, not before. To stop rejecting Jesus Christ and to believe in Him, is the repentance that saves.

Acts 16:30-31 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. (KJV)

Salvation comes only through believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. Simply believe and you will be saved.

Thus says the LORD, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD.
